What does it mean “to bend over backwards”?

To do something for someone even if it is an inconvenience

To bend over backwards is an English idiom that is often used in Business English.  For most of us bending over backwards (like in the photo above) is something that we can´t do with ease, and we are not relaxed doing.  It can knock us off balance and leave us in pain.  If you have to bend over backwards to complete a job it means it definitely took some extra effort!

 

How to use it:

Present Simple:

(When the action of “bending over backwards” is something that is done repetitively or habitually)

  • I bend over backwards to please my boss.
  • You need to bend over backwards if you want to succeed in this company.
  • He/She bends over backwards to win new clients.
  • We bend over backwards to constantly create new ideas.
  • They always bend over backwards for him.
  • You don´t ever bend over backwards for me. (Negative Form)

Past Simple:

(The action of “bending over backwards” took place at a specific time in the past, which is now over)

  • I bent over backwards to get you the appointment next week.
